Friends at CIMAS during fall quarter told me about this incredible opportunity to meet people and travel cheaply! It’s called “couch surfing” (www.couchsurfing.org) and I consider it a way to meet the local people wherever you’re traveling and in South America it’s pretty much like having a host family and getting all the best tips for whatever city you’re in. Luckily I was able to find lots of hosts on the website in many different cities in Ecuador and Peru, and many times the houses we stayed at were in fabulous locations in the city and we slept on actual beds, only once a couch! Katrina, Lela, Kelly and I often had better experiences while traveling because of this program. I highly encourage everyone to look into this and even host people at your house if you’ve got room!
